Guitarra Portuguesa
Digital Print available in 20x20cm
From my Instruments of the World Collection
Portuguese Guitar. A plucked string instrument with twelve steel strings, strung in six courses of two strings. The iconic sound of the beautiful Fado music, it is a descendant of the Medieval citole. The Guitarra Portuguesa comes in three main variations: the Lisboa, the Coimbra and the Porto. They vary in scale and body measurements, but overall they can be identified from their scroll ornaments showing a snail (caracol) in the Lisboa, a teardrop (lágrima) in the Coimbra, and all sorts of shapes in the Porto (such as a dragon, a mermaid etc).
